Useful Formatting Techniques

An understanding of some of the basic formatting in Excel will help you to produce high quality work paper in excel spreadsheet. This topic will show you formatting cells ranging from basic formatting like adjusting column width to more advanced formatting which will manipulate data into more user friendly formats.

Let's get started!

Column Width
To change the width of the column to the longest line of data, double click the left mouse between column B and C when the ‘+’ icon appears (as below).

Number Formatting
The amount column (C) needs to be formatted so that it is easy to read, i.e. consistent number of decimal places and 1,000 separators (commas).

To do this left click on cell C2 ‘Amount’ and press ctrl+“shift”+“¯simultaneously). This will select all the cells down to C8.
At the bottom right of the screen, you will see SUM=14257 and other functions such as the average of the range C2:C8 (Average), or count the number of items (COUNT).

Click on the ribbon ‘HomeWhere it says ‘number, click on the little box on the right side of the box.  The number box should pop up.  Click on the number in the category list.  In the decimal places box choose 2.  Then click on the 1000 separator (,) box.

Another way to increase or decrease the decimal places is to use the following buttons:

That's it!
